• Managing links between university development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

    This forum is organized and supported by the Green University Union of Taiwan (GUUT). This union was established in 2013 and its goals are pursuing sustainable development of our country, protecting our environment and educating our students and society. President Tsong-Ming Lin of Nanhua University in Chiayi county of Taiwan is the current chairperson of the union. In this forum, the union invites three distinguish speakers, including President Han-Chieh Chao of National Dong Hwa University, Dr. Pei-Jung Lu, Associate Vice President of Office of Research and Development at National Cheng Kung University, and editor-in-chief Zhao-Yong Huang of CSR@CommonWealth Magazine, to share their views and visions on promoting and executing SDGs. By this forum, the Union hopes to promote the goals of this Union and contribute to the pursuing of sustainable development of our country and the world.

    Tsong-Ming Lin

    President, Nanhua University​

    Dr. Tsong-Ming Lin became the President of Nanhua University in January, 2013. He obtained his PhD in industrial management from Clemson University, U.S.A. As a scholar and expert in his field, President Lin has a long record of winning great respect from his peers and colleagues. In 2009, he was asked to join the Ministry of Education as the Political Deputy Minister. Prior to taking up his position in government, President Lin had been the President of National Yunlin University of Science and Technology for 8 years.


    As President of Nanhua University, he has presided over a remarkable transformation on campus, focusing on life education, environmental sustainability, intellectual innovation, and the Three Acts of Goodness initiative. In addition to President Lin being honored in 2015 with the Outstanding Administration Achievement Award on Life Education by the Ministry of Education, Nanhua University was also the recipient of the Life Education School with Distinction award and selected to be the location for the establishment of the National Life Education Center, a government-commissioned project. President Lin has a distinguished record in his advocacy of issues related to climate change, carbon reduction, vegetarianism, and sustainable development.


    In 2012, he was presented with the Sustainable Development World Pilot Hero Award by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as the First Class Professional Education – Culture Medal by the Ministry of Education. Recently, Nanhua University received several distinguished awards, including the National Sustainability Development Award, the National Quality Awards: Sustainable Development Award, the Sustainability Excellence Award from the British Standards Institution (BSI), the School Social Responsibility Award from the Mirror Post (Hong Kong), ranked 77th in the 2019 Green University Worldwide rankings, and ranked 9th in the 2020 Top Buddhist Universities rankings.


    President Lin’s unwavering commitment to caring and serving the underprivileged community, giving back to society, and ensuring that the disadvantaged are not left behind, are exceptional. He has led by example through his work in showing that kindheartedness radiates to all those around us.

    Han-Chieh Chao

    President, National Dong Hwa University

    Han-Chieh Chao received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1989 and 1993, respectively. He is currently a professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Dong Hwa University, where he also serves as president. He is also with the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Ilan University, Taiwan. He was the Director of the Computer Center for Ministry of Education Taiwan from September 2008 to July 2010.


    His research interests include IPv6, Cross-Layer Design, Cloud Computing, IoT, and 5G Mobile Networks. He has authored or co-authored 4 books and has published about 400 refereed professional research papers. He has completed more than 150 MSEE thesis students and 11 Ph.D. students. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Institution of Engineering and Technology Networks, the Journal of Internet Technology, the International Journal of Internet Protocol Technology, and the International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing.


    He is a Fellow of IET (IEE) and a Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society. Dr. Chao has been ranked as the top 10 Computer Scientists in Taiwan for 2020 by Guide2Research. Due to Dr. Chao’s contribution of suburban ICT education, he has been awarded the US President's Lifetime Achievement Award and International Albert Schweitzer Foundation Human Contribution Award in 2016.
